The US has one, France too, maybe the UK. July 4, July 14, November 5 are all days of celebration. Germany could have one too. Yet no one seems to care too much, so perhaps it's time to change that by starting with a few simple celebrations.

Germany offers its citizens a generous amount of days off during the year. National holidays here do, however, have a curious aspect. They sometimes fall on a Sunday, when almost everything is closed anyway.

One major day is Reunification Day, which has an interesting history. Originally designed to remember separation, it was celebrated in early summer. Nowadays, it falls on 3 October and almost everywhere closes. People relax, take a stroll, go window shopping, visit family. Few actually celebrate.
